So I finally got around to ordering a new rear seat for the 1979 Jeep CJ-5. I decided to go with the TrailMax II by Bestop.
It’s a fixed back bench that bolts to the existing factory seat mounts in the floor. The seat does not come with these bolts so you may have to pickup some replacements if you’re missing them.
If you’re missing the factory bolts you’ll need Grade 5 – 7/16-20 x 1.50 inch. You will need 5 bolts.
The seat comes with new brackets and hardware to attach the brackets to the seat frame. The rear bracket is a latch allowing you to tilt the entire seat forward.
I also installed new seat belts manufactured by Seatbelt Solutions
The instructions say you need two people but I was able to install this seat by myself. I attached the front backers to the seat before placing inside the Jeep.
Then I installed the bolts through the front backets to the floor.
I installed the rear bracket to the rear center mounting hole. You’ll need to find the correct position, so you might need to bolt the rear bracket, lower the seat and check the latch to bracket.
Once you have found the correct rear bracket position, you can go ahead and torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. and 25 ft. lbs. for the seat belt anchors.
Here is what the seat looks like installed in the Jeep.
I purchased the seat from Summit Racing Part Number 39437-15
I purchased the seat belts from Quadratec Part Number Q1800P-100
I’m trying to decide which front seats to install. Bestop doesn’t seem to offer the low back in denim, so it will look off having vinyl front and denim rear.
I’m considering one of these seats below:
Mastercraft Nomad Part Number 525500
Smittybilt Standard Bucket in Black Denim Part Number 44915
I would like a seat that’s between a low and high back seat, but I’m having trouble finding any.
I’ll post pictures of the front seats installed once I make a choice.
